July 15: Children

How blessed is God!
And what a blessing God is!
God’s the Loving Parent of our Master, Jesus Christ,
and takes us to the high places of blessing in him.
Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, God had us in mind,
had settled on us as the focus of God’s love, to be made whole and holy by God’s love.
Long, long ago God decided to adopt us into God’s family
through our brother Jesus Christ.

from Ephesians 1:1-14 (The Message)

“Too often we forget that discipline really means to teach, not to punish. A disciple is a student, not a recipient of behavioral consequences.”
Dr. Dan Siegel, The Whole-Brain Child

The apostle Paul reminds us in his letter to the Ephesians

we are blessed beyond measure,

we are the foundation of the world

we are holy and blameless before God.

What a wonderful focused expression for all of us as we raise our children and grandchildren. What an intentional example as we encounter the children of our community and they witness our example of love for one another.

Children are born intelligent, responsive people. They are immediately poised to communicate and participate in living. What an opportunity we have to be apostolic, like Paul, gently spreading the teachings we so love through discipline to the rising generations.
