July 17: Refuge

Look and see, there is no one at my right hand;
    no one is concerned for me.
I have no refuge;
    no one cares for my life.

I cry to you, Lord;
    I say, “You are my refuge,
    my portion in the land of the living.”
from Psalm 142

Sleeping Outside,
a series of haikus by young adults in our congregation

Where I find refuge:
relationships. The privilege
Of having a roof.

Sleeping outside is
Not as romantic in streets
As in the forest.

Poor friends, with their names
Forgotten in shadows of
Fear-born assumptions.

Clearing out the tents:
Humanity sacrificed
For reputation.

Let’s take away homes
Then wring our hands over blight;
Gentrification.
