July 23: Joyful

“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.”
from Psalm 100

What brings you joy? A wedding, a new baby, a new job, a new home, a new love? A quiet walk, an unexpected surprise, a tree, a flower, a rainbow? The list goes on… What are your most joyful moments? Hang on to those moments like precious jewels.

What about those moments when there is no joy? When joy seems an impossibility? Those times when we feel grief, despair, sadness, hopelessness, loneliness. That list goes on, too…

A wise pastor once compared those joyless times to our personal forty days/years in the desert. The survival of that desolate time depends on faith – faith that there is an oasis ahead where we can again find the joy of life.

Embracing the joyous times in our lives is the promise that in the darkest times of life, joy awaits. A joy that will add to our collection of precious jewels.
